OVERVIEW: The Tp 47 (SAAB Lightweight Torpedo, SLWT) is a lightweight, wire-guided, anti-submarine torpedo developed by Sweden. It entered service in 2023 and is designed for deployment from submarines, surface ships, helicopters, and small craft.

DETAILS: “Tp” stands for Torped, and “47” denotes the 4th generation in the Tp 4x lineage. Developed by Saab Dynamics beginning around 2015, it replaces the earlier Tp 45 and builds on Swedish experience spanning decades. The torpedo is 2 850 mm long, 400 mm in diameter, weighs ~340 kg, and carries a ~50 kg PBX warhead optimized for anti-submarine warfare. It uses an electric pump-jet propulsion system powered by lithium-iron-phosphate batteries, enabling speeds over 40 kn and a range of at least 20 km (prepared for up to 50 km). Guidance is provided via wire and active/passive digital sonar (MS4), with two-way communication capability.

TYPE: Lightweight Wire-Guided Anti-Submarine Torpedo

FUNCTION: Launched from 400 mm launchers on platforms including submarines, ships, helicopters, or small craft, the Tp 47 travels under wire guidance during initial and mid-course phases. It transitions to digital active/passive acoustic homing for terminal engagement of submerged submarine targets.
